Fine Particulate Matter

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels are highest in Ascension (9.6) and East Baton Rouge (9.5), surpassing both the state (8.6) and national averages (7.4). Poor air quality is associated with respiratory issues, cardiovascular disease, and premature death, particularly among children, the elderly, and individuals with preexisting health conditions.

    Severe Housing

Severe housing problems, including overcrowding, high costs, and lack of essential facilities, are prevalent in East Baton Rouge, Tangipahoa, and Pointe Coupee (16% each). These figures align with or exceed both the state and national levels, pointing to significant housing instability. Residents facing severe housing problems often experience greater stress, mental health challenges, and exposure to unhealthy environments, underscoring the need for affordable housing initiatives and improved housing policies.
